"Montes is a dead ringer for Billie Holiday. She looks, sounds, moves just like her, and hearing her sing many of her most recognizable songs, from “God Bless the Child” to “Strange Fruit” to “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” with accompaniment from Music Director Ayesu Lartey is a gift. And hearing her tell the woeful and tragic stories from her life while in a booze- and heroin-fueled haze we know she never pulls out of is downright painful."
"Many a keen performer has attempted to capture the iconic jazz singer and composer known nearly as well for her long-suffering as for her genius as an artist, from Diana Ross to Audra McDonald to, most recently, Andra Day, on screen, each bringing her own take on the legend. However, to witness Montes in this role on the Knickerbocker Theatre stage, is an unparalleled experience, as if watching the unraveling of one of the 20th Century’s finest artists."
"Montes captures Holiday’s fiery personality as she wends her way through the stories, at times humorous, but always tragic, interspersing them with songs, making us feel terrific compassion for Holiday and leaving us wanting more as she saunters in and out of the spotlight, from the edge of the piano to up and down stairs to her stage, lighting cigarettes, sipping gin, and at one apex moment, shooting up backstage."

"Desiree Montes and Renata Eastlick share a powerful and believable connection in both unfinished tales; Eastlick radiates an inner strength, Montes glows with an inner warmth the world can’t dampen." - Matt Palm, Orlando Sentinel
"If we accept there is such a thing as “mindless entertainment” — and I think we all have experienced that at some point — then it stands to reason its opposite exists. That might be just what “Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You Too, August Wilson)” is — a play in which nearly every line is meant to engage your mind." - Matt Palm, Orlando Sentinel

"And the play itself will resonate with me even longer, thanks to a beautiful, first-class production that had me ugly crying while sitting front and center...The performances are equal parts funny, lacerating, joyful, satirical, and deeply moving. An outstanding ensemble of five brings forth a work that is exceedingly intelligent and unapologetically Black.
While the final sequence brought me to ugly tears as these five perfect humans stood onstage freely speaking what Blackness means to them in front of a predominantly white audience with heartbreaking honesty and clarity, I continued to cry on my way home thinking that the white people in the audience that needed to hear it probably did not—making the need for this brilliant work more necessary than it did when it first began.
Go. Spend your money. Listen. Listen to Renata Eastlick. Listen to K.P. Powell. Listen to Elaina Watson Listen to Zoa Glows. Listen to Desiree Montes (but also WATCH her, because her face says about a million more words than the ones she actually speaks).
Listen to connect." - Matthew MacDermid

"Friends, I *strongly* encourage you to go see Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill at Players by the Sea Theatre.
Desiree Montes gives a MASTERFUL performance as Billie Holiday—from the moment she steps onstage, she takes you on a captivating and oftentimes mesmerizing journey. She is thoughtful and present, and brilliantly shifts between grounded and ungrounded in one harrowing second.
This isn’t a cabaret. It’s not a biography. It’s one moment, one night in time where you get lost with Billie." - Bradley Akers

From the songwriting team behind the smash-hit Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen and the Academy Award-winning film La La Land, A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL, brings the classic 1983 movie to hilarious life on stage! Following a successful Broadway run garnering three 2013 Tony Award nominations including BEST MUSICAL, BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL (Joseph Robinette) and BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul), along with six Drama Desk nominations, and two Outer Critics Circle nominations, A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL is set to take historic downtown Sanford by storm! Based on the perennial holiday movie favorite, A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle (“You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”). An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Hailed by The Associated Press as “a joyous Christmas miracle,” The New York Times writes “I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face.” A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL is a triple-dog-dare of a good time and it is sure to warm your heart this holiday season! |

“Flying Lessons” has received several awards and was a finalist for several others. These awards were evaluated by a team of judges in the audience.
It’s still hard for me to believe that our little show went to the New York Musical Festival, much less walked away with the reviews that we did and now with some awards to boot. Thank you to every person who helped make this all possible!

GHOST: THE MUSICAL (June 14 - June 30)
This iconic musical is adapted from the 1990 Academy Award winning film starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. It follows the story of Sam and Molly, a young New York couple whose connection takes a shocking turn after Sam's untimely death. Trapped between two worlds, Sam refuses to leave Molly when he learns she is in grave danger. Desperate to communicate with her, he turns to a storefront psychic, Oda Mae Brown, who helps him protect Molly and avenge his death. "...you want to show up at Theater West End to see Desiree Montes do her thing as Oda Mae Brown...Stepping into those psychic shoes isn't easy, not only because it requires playing against an actor you have to pretend you can't see but also because Whoopi Goldberg's characterization is so singular and specific that no audience member will be able to get the Hollywood icon out of their head. Enter Montes, who manages to capture everything we love about Goldberg's performance while also making the character entirely her own - and belting out some very nice notes while she's at it..." - Aaron Wallace (BroadwayWorld.com)

![]() Concert Version of El Wiz
Timucua Arts Foundation *Showcasing the now full-length version of the original hour long concept. EL WIZ is presented in concert. We are ever-growing and ever present.* Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz” gets re-set in contemporary Puerto Rico in Paul Castañeda and Juan Cantú’s “The Wiz.” There are great ideas in Castañeda’s adaptation to make the story relevant — the Scarecrow has Asperger’s, the Tin Man is gay. Most important, the tornado is now Hurricane Maria. In the stirring opening, the islanders plead for help – “We are one,” they sing in Spanish. “We are part of your country.” But thankfully, “El Wiz” isn’t a political screed. Rather, it’s an exuberant celebration of heritage and resilience. |
:RAVE REVIEWS:
"I just watched a beautiful and transformative show. When an actor can completely alter not only her voice, but appearance to become the character she's playing and be stellar at it, the room is yours!"
"Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill starring Desiree Montes at Theater West End in Sanford was incredible...A must see!" I bought my ticket, I stepped into a bar, I bought my wine, and I sat down....ready...ready to see a show...a show that I had the honor of doing myself almost 3 years before, and here I was, ready to see it through another story tellers eyes...another rendition of LADY DAY AT EMERSON BAD AND GRILL that I had never seen or heard of before I personally did it. Aaahh but I had a friend, an extremely talented woman, who was about to do it AGAIN for a 2nd time, since her own debut 5 years ago herself.... FOLKS , I was TRANSCENDED to 1959 effortlessly. I sat at a table top right in front of the stage, in front of a piano and a mic stand. And when SHE stepped out, THEEE Ms. Billie Holiday, dressed in her white gown and her white gloves..... I, we, we're all transcended, taken back to that moment of her final performance approximately 4 months before she died, where we got to hear her story, her struggle; feel her pain, and her sense of humor through song and monologue . This.... this is a night that you need to spend at Emerson's bar-and-grill with THE Lady Day! Make it a date night, a mother's day date, a girls night out, a self date to support the arts!!! If you love jazz you must go! If you like Billie Holiday you must go! If you enjoy live music you must go! If you like intimate settings with a glass of wine you must go! If you enjoy theater you must go! Desiree Montes is ABSOLUTELY PERFECTION as Billie Holiday. I expected the human in me to be critical...but the artist in me took over and I LITERALLY was all smiles and mesmerized the ENTIRE TIME!" |
LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR & GRILL:
The time is 1959. The place is a seedy bar in Philadelphia. The audience is about to witness one of Billie Holiday's last performances, given four months before her death. More than a dozen musical numbers are interlaced with salty, often humorous reminisceces to project a riveting portrait of the lady and her music. "Do yourself a favor and witness a masterclass in acting and transformation. Desiree Montes is a GODDESS."
"Listen to me! When I tell you this woman transformed into Billie Holiday right in front of my eyes?! Lawd! Desiree Montes you are a beautiful and brilliant talent!" "My wig is still split from an incredible performance by Billie...sorry, Desiree Montes!" "Ya'll Lady Day at Theater West End was a masterpiece. Desiree Montes transports you into the life of Billie Holiday and makes you forget you were even watching a show. Top performance of 2019 by far." "Desiree Montes is a transformational marvel in Lady Day at Theater West End. It's one of the most engrossing pieces of theatre I've ever seen. She becomes Billie and the story she tells is beautifully heartbreaking and heartbreakingly beautiful." "Desiree Montes doesn't just portray Billie Holiday, she BECOMES Billie Holiday while brilliantly delivering almost an hour and a half of Lady Day's signature numbers and, in addresses to the audience, sometimes bitterly funny, sometimes moving and chilling, strips bare her life story." "Desiree Montes is so convincingly believable as Billie Holiday, and gives a moving, heartbreaking and humorous performance." |
NUNSENSE:

The nuns decide to put on a benefit performance of the musical Grease in order to raise the rest of the money before the health department discovers their secret! Rating: FF (Family Friendly) |

THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF SONG: AN EVENING WITH HAROLD ARLEN-
(5/14 9:00pm & 5/15 3:00pm) With an amazing catalog of songs that includes "Over the Rainbow," "Stormy Weather," "It's Only a Paper Moon," "I've Got the World on a String," "Get Happy" "Blues in the Night" and "Come Rain or Come Shine," it seems a criminal oversight that Harold Arlen's name doesn't resonate with the public the way Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George & Ira Gershwin's do. Starring: Desiree Perez, David Kay, Amanda Hudson Giese & Chris McCabe |
Don't miss the fresh, unique Broadway musical HANDS ON A HARDBODY in its Central Florida Regional Premiere! Produced by TheatreWorks Florida, this high-energy musical infused with rock, country, blues and gospel is being hailed as “musical theater heaven!”
"...And Desiree Perez is magnificent. Her character's religious nature is presented with no hint of highbrow condescension, but simply and purely. When she feels the "Joy of the Lord," as her signature song is titled, the spirit is contagious."-Matt J. Palm (The Orlando Sentinel)
"Desiree Perez, as devout Christian Norma Valverde, delivers undoubtedly the best vocals of the show. Her song "Joy of the Lord," which begins as a fit of uncontrollable, delirious laughter will absolutely bring a smile to your face, and just might bring a tear to your eye."- Matt Tamanini (BWW)

Central Florida Community Arts is proud to present Into the Woods as the inaugural performance of its brand new CFCArt's Theatre Program! One of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular works, Into the Woods follows a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to attend the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. Some of the show’s classic songs include “Giants in The Sky,” “Agony,” and “Children Will Listen.” Different from our large scale Summer Broadway Season concert version production, this will be a creative, immersive, fully staged show in an intimate space. Experience this full-length musical theater masterpiece, directed by Donald Rupe, in a whole new way! |

:TRANSLATION: "Highlight an even balanced cast, whose characters never try to excel over each other, on the contrary, it is clear of the collaboratin between these, where everyone seems to favor the performance of the other, enjoying an excellent level of quality."-Adriana Collado (EL SENTINEL) "Perez and Rivera are tremendous as Daniela and Carla. The silly repartee between the two stylists is a highlight of the show, and both display tremendous voices. I look forward to seeing them both in larger roles in the future....Fortunately, this risky collaboration has resulted in a tremendous product, which is quite possibly the best musical I have seen since moving to the City Beautiful. Hopefully other local companies will see the success of this production and continue to challenge their audiences with new and exciting programming. With just three shows left, do not hesitate to get tickets to this extremely special show. As tickets are selling fast, I recommend buying them online quickly."-Matt Tamanini (BROADWAY WORLD REVIEW)

Solos is nothing less than the history of jazz in America, as told through the relationship of two people, in three movements and a coda. At its heart is the fabulous, always-changing life of the music itself, a dance of timing, in which the rhythms of dialog mimic the rhythms of jazz and the music becomes the third character, reinterpreting the actors' emotional involvements.
Trumpeter Ben "Blue" Miller has spent years blowin' horn in seedy bars, vaudeville, the carnies and worse. New Years Eve of 1939 he meets society girl Ellie Grace in a hotel ballroom. He plays with the band, her daddy owns the place. She's a gifted composer with no outlet for her music, and he's an itinerant musician, a "gypsy" without a way to the top. They begin a passionate relationship that lasts a lifetime — she composes but is unwilling to perform; he plays her dazzling new music and accepts the acclaim from the audience.
The music changes, from swing and bebop through "free" jazz to melodic post-modern, with Ellie's compositions leading the way. Ellie is delighted to give her music to the man she loves, but becomes frustrated by her invisibility as the decades go by, with Ben unwilling to risk falling from the heights he has attained ... until things finally explode.
Solos during regular performance is accompanied by the music of composer/trumpeter Brian Groder.
"If you love music; if you love theatre; if you've ever loved a woman; see Joseph Hayes' vibrant, moving play, SOLOS."- Darlyn Finch Kuhn
"..stellar performances by Michael Sapp as Blue and Desiree Perez as Ellie, is as much about the power of music and creativity as it is about how the couples’ lives changes over the years. It truly holds you in an almost hypnotic way."-R.T. ROBESON (Freeline Media Review)
"Desiree Perez and Michael Sapp are explosive together. It's beyond "chemistry"."-Deborah S.
